Mise-en-place refers to organising and arranging ingredients that a cook will require to prepare the meal (or meals). A good mise-en-place is a huge improvement to your cooking experience. In no way it is a waste of time! It allows you to have a clear overview of the meal's preparation and have everything ready when needed. This will significantly reduce cooking stress, and allow you to solely focus on the pleasure of cooking!
Art Director Hedvig A Kushner (a smoothie enthusiast) took mise-en-place to a new level, pairing smoothies' ingredients with pantone colour themes. Not only is the result is beautiful and inspiring, it also reminds us of the pleasure of cooking itself and the natural beauty of food.
The artist describes the project as a "delicious colour experiement":
"I make a lot of smoothies and noticed it kinda works like mixing paint. Add a strawberry, get a hot pink hue, add some spinach and get a subtle green. Pantone Smoothies is an artsy little project seeking an answer to the question: is it possible to create tasty smoothies in any Pantone color?"
Challenge accepted, and challenge succeeded! Here are the behind the scenes tips for you to try this at home:
"The process is pretty simple. I buy colored paper from a local art store, match it to a Pantone swatch, and make the smoothie to match whatever color the swatch is. Me and Mike photograph the fruit lay downs and smoothies using the colored paper as a backdrop, in a light box in the office basement. "
